This is the story of how the human Victor Ulysses Kodlac became who he is today ... the vampire Vukodlac.

From the depth of night a wave of memory crashed into him. Victor saw lifetimes
and more, he lived them. He was a monk in a church betrayed by his most trusted mentor. Plunged into blood and cursed to wander without the blessing of the Lord's light. He was a hunter on the highlands.  Wet and cold he struggled through the cold winter tracking a long vanished animal. He felt elation of belief and the heartbreak of disillusionment. He starved and killed and then suddenly was gripped with a most intense pain, the crush of oblivion.

As the memories that were not truly his were ripped away he was left crippled in
darkness. He knew nothing but pain. His tongue boiled with its tastes. His ears
deafened by the thundering void. His skin crawled with the fire of nothingness
and his only thoughts were of escape. When a light so bright it mattered not if
his eyes were closed struck him he reeled in as yet another scene was locked in
agony. It beckoned him with sweet promises of freedom and an end to his suffering. He reached for it but felt a growing nausea in his belly. His body should be long vanquished, he thought as his mind raced to understand what was happening. It was clear that he was dead. He'd lost too much blood and the light at the end of the tunnel was a clear indication that he was about to meet his
maker.

But something tugged at his being. When he should have been running towards the promise of eternity he dwelt in anguish and saw another door. This one he knew led back to the world he had just parted. He understood that in turning away from the light know he would be cursing himself to darkness but he didn't care about the afterlife. He had things to accomplish, there was too much unfinished.  There would be time later to bask in the light of the here after. His time had just begun and he could feel the power lurking just below the surface of his blood. He knew that returning would mean damnation but also power. Pain he could deal with if it meant he could do as he pleased when it pleased him. It was through sheer will that he forced himself through that black door and reentered the vortex of lives gone by.
